Jan Whitworth Jan has been a central member of the Bethel Area Health Service for eleven years, as a Physicians Assistant. Barbara Russell Barbara is the School Health Coordinator in SAD 44, has been 26 years in education (19 in the Bethel area) including outdoor, recreational and environmental as well as 16 years of Health and Physical Education. In her spare time, she has been an Outward Bound instructor, and is a regular user of roads and trails for biking and hiking. Cheri Thurston Cheri has started a number of businesses, including realty, retail malls, and a successful and beautiful inn. She has three children, and the entire family are keen outdoors enthusiasts. Cheri is a principal of REMAX in the Mountains. Jeff Parsons Outward Bound brought Jeff and his wife to Bethel twenty-five years ago to develop a base of operations in the area. Since then, they have developed a four-child family, and a business with camping, guiding, and outfitting on the bank of the local river. Jim List Jim started life with a degree in zoology from Michigan, and has held numerous jobs using his interest in outdoor recreation. He was North Carolina Aquarium Education Director, Director of the Nags Head Woods Preserve for the nature Conservancy, and manager for the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve in Maine. His advanced degree is in Geographic Information Sciences. Jim Mitchell As Executive Director of the Mahoosuc Land Trust, Jim has played a lead role in acquiring a number of crucial pieces of property for the land trust. He performs the crucial role of ensuring that trails committee initiatives are consistent with the land trust’s overall mission and programs. Marcel Polak Having recently started his own Real Estate business specializing in environmentally sensitive acquisitions, Marcel spent several years as the Appalachian Mountain Club’s representative in western Maine. One initiative he headed was the creation of a watershed wide network of businesses, including mapping, and collaborative ventures.
Mike Broderick Mike’s work as chief buyer for the American Ski Company, leaves him little time for his passion of hiking and rollerblading. He lives in town with his wife and two sons.
Steve Wight Owner/operator of the Sunday River Inn, Chairman of the Land Use Regulatory Commission, founder of Friends of the Androscoggin and a host of other community initiatives, Steve is a leading activist for community involvement. Recreation and tourism has been his life blood. As a Maine Guide, the woods are his passion.
Robin Zinchuk Robin is one of the Bethel area’s most energetic and effective community organizers and leaders. As long-time director of the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce, Robin has been an advocate for bringing more trails to Bethel for over ten years.
Cathy Lane Cathy is a massage therapist and small business owner. She is an active user of trails and an articulate spokesperson for the trail effort.
Tim Bruce Tim is Director of Risk Management at Sunday River Ski Resort and has been director of the Ski Patrol. He is an accomplished bike rider and multiple finisher at the “Leadville 100” the nation’s highest altitude distance cycling event.
Scott Cole Scott is Bethel Town Manager and has been instrumental in appropriately advancing the cause for addition of valuable public trails infrastructure in Bethel.
Nancy Davis Nancy is a retired educator and administrator who in a brief period of time has advanced the communications materials for the committee, including a new educational brochure and display boards for public events.
Sylvia Vander Sluis Sylvia is a business analyst for Hewlett- Packard and a certified process improvement expert. She loves to ski, bike, hike, and canoe in the Bethel region with her husband, Hal, and dog, Max. Sylvia is also trained as a painter and spends much personal time with mixed-media projects.
Burnham Martin Burnham is an “honorary member” of the committee by virtue of being the official technical advisor to the committee appointed by the National Park Service Rivers and Trails program. In less than one year, he has provided critical guidance to the committee based on his years of experience in trail planning and development. |

Bonnie Pooley (committee chair) Bonnie has lived and worked in Bethel for thirty-two years as a teacher at Gould Academy. She founded and now chairs the Bethel Conservation Commission and sits on the Board of the Mahoosuc Land Trust, serving as secretary. A registered Maine Guide, she runs a small summer business taking canoe trips throughout Maine. |

Kirk Siegel (committee coordinator) Kirk came to Bethel twenty years ago with a strong interest in River Systems, their development and protection. He was a member of the Gould Academy faculty, completed a Law degree, and now makes his living specializing in land conservation and real estate law. He lives with his wife and 2 children.
