Elmer L. Lovejoy: born October 27, 1862 in Bethel to Charles B. (1834 – 1912) and
Celia D. (Bishop) Lovejoy (1836 – 1912). On May 1, 1896 he was promoted to
Superintendent of the Portland & Rumford Falls Railroad with an office at
the corporate headquarters in Rumford. 1876 family moved to Perham, Maine in Aroostook County – farmed and Elmer attended
public school. 1892-93 attended a course at Gould Academy in Bethel and then
telegraph operators course in Boston; 1884, telegraph operator at Sabattus,
Maine Central Railroad, then ticket agent at Winthrop; 1894, station agent at
Mechanic Falls for Portland & Rumford Falls Railroad; 1896 superintendent
of the Portland & Rumford Falls Railroad at Rumford; 1910 census -
railroad superintendent; 1930 retired and living with his son Charles W. at
Franklin Street in Rumford.
On October 20, 1887, he married Miss Lena A. Flanders of Winthrop and they had two children,
Marie F. and Hazel M. (Later records indicate that they had a son Charles
W.) Mr. Lovejoy was a Mason, Blue
Lodge, Winthrop Chapter, Trinity Commandery, Knights Templar of Augusta and
Improved Order of Red Men and Independent Order of Foresters at Mechanic
Falls. His descendants include:
daughter, Marie Lovejoy Dennis, b. 1890; son-in-law Carlton A. Dennis, a
chemical engineer at the Rumford (?) mill; grandchildren, Elmer Dennis, Ruth
Groucher, Marjorie Flanagan, and Robert Dennis.
